Response to Straits Times article whether sex education should go beyond the message of abstinence.
I think we need to consider the purpose of sex education beyond just the teenage years. While it is true that the number of teenagers having abortions and STD is a concern, there are also many adults who are just as ignorant or reckless. Isn’t it time that we start educating our young on not just the biological aspect of sex, but birth control and STDs so that they will be able to carry the knowledge they have into adulthood? Or do we want to continue to have a generation of parents who are uncomfortable and ill-equipped to talk about sex with their kids, leaving them to their own devices?
Sex education doesn’t have to be simply about abstinence or promotion of condom use. It can be about empowering our young about their bodies and their options, so that they can make the best choices for themselves, when they are ready. It may be in their adulthood, or it may be earlier, but at least they have a way other than the road of ignorance.
